Fight shorts
Muay thai shorts are short and wide-cut so the leg can throw a kick without restriction. MMA and grappling shorts are longer, closer fitting and have no pockets or drawstrings on the outside. For AJP and IBJJF no-gi, shorts must have no pockets, no buttons, no exposed drawstring and no zips, and must fall between mid-thigh and the knee.
Muay thai cut
Wide, short, and slit at the side so the knee can come up. They look odd off the mat and there is no substitute for them on it — a longer short will stop a head kick at exactly the wrong moment.
Grappling and no-gi
Flat waistband, internal drawcord, no metal or plastic anywhere. Compression shorts underneath are permitted and are what most people wear. Colour rules apply at AJP: black, white, black and white, or the colour of your rank.

We are not listing fight shorts yet. When we do, every one will carry the same thing our gis already carry — a verdict on whether it passes, checked against the body that governs your sport and dated.
