Uniforms
Judo uniforms
A judogi is cut looser and heavier than a BJJ gi, with a longer jacket and wider sleeves, because judo grips and BJJ grips need different things. For IJF-sanctioned competition the judogi must be an IJF-approved model — the federation publishes an official register, and a gi that is not on it does not pass.
Why a BJJ gi is not a judogi
A BJJ gi is cut tight to deny grips. A judogi is cut loose because the rules require enough slack for an opponent to take a grip — and a competition measure checks it. Turning up to a judo event in a BJJ gi fails on sleeve width before anything else.
Single or double weave
Single weave is lighter, cheaper and fine for training. Double weave is heavier, much harder to grip and what serious competitors use. In this climate a double weave takes a long time to dry, which is a real consideration.
